Introduction

“Do you know those people with signs in Vama?”

“Yes.”

“I think that’s how they feel, as high as they are.”

Despite Rotaru’s attempt to create a simple comic painting, the final result defies and mocks Death in an involuntary way. Johnny (a common, diminutive name) represents all of us and reminds us what we carry underneath, wherever we may be. In a way, we are ignorant of our finality, a necessary feeling without which we couldn’t live, without which we wouldn’t enjoy existence.

The painting is a representation of rebellion, of the defiant attitude of nonconformists who mock serious subjects. It reminds us that we should enjoy the journey and not mourn in advance because of the destination, otherwise life would have no meaning. There are many acts we do just for the sake of the act itself and not for the final result, just as it is with the life we live, and this idea is paramount in the subject at hand, an idea that Rotaru captures masterfully and tries to instill in us with tact.

And to complete the effect, Johnny was left unfinished. This task falls on the shoulders of the first owner, who is asked by Rotaru to complete the empty sheet in Johnny’s hands. This unique idea masterfully represents reality, as life is always spontaneous and unpredictable, always leaving us curious about what comes next.

Artistic Movement and Working Style

“Johnny’s Sign” fits within the neo-pop art and neo-expressionism movement. The painting is characterized by a playful and ironic approach to everyday themes, combined with elements of dark humor. Ciprian Rotaru’s working style uses acrylic on canvas, with an expressive technique and bold details, reminiscent of comic book aesthetics and expressionist art.

Colors and Composition

The dominant background colors are red, yellow, and blue, creating a vivid and dynamic contrast. The skeletal figure, in more tempered shades of blue and beige, is placed in the center of the composition, immediately capturing the viewer’s attention. The paint application is energetic and textured, contributing to the sensation of movement and vitality despite the morbid subject.

Interpretation of Symbols and Composition

  • The skeleton beneath the clothes reminds us that we carry death with us everywhere, reminding us of our mortality, but the subject doesn’t call for deep or melancholic introspection, rather, it’s a celebration of the life we live while we’re still here;
  • The vivid colors in the background enhance the euphoric hallucination, suggesting how experiences aren’t calculated, but rather accidental;
  • Life and action defy death; even if our destiny is final, that doesn’t mean we should abandon ourselves to it and not live our lives;
  • Johnny is a common name, the clothes are ordinary, the sign is empty and waiting to be completed; Johnny could be any of us;

The painting presents a human skeleton, dressed in modern attire and holding an empty sign in its hands, against a chaotic and colorful background. The skeletal figure wears a blue cap and a dark polo shirt, giving it a familiar and ironic appearance. The sign held by the skeleton suggests a message that isn’t explicit, leaving room for interpretation and adding a note of mystery and dark humor.

The background is composed of an explosion of vibrant colors, with shades of red, yellow, blue, and white, applied in a chaotic and dynamic way. This intense composition strongly contrasts with the central figure, highlighting it and amplifying the visual impact.

Associations and Inspirations

Ciprian Rotaru can be associated with artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, for the use of vibrant colors and abstract symbolism, and with Roy Lichtenstein, for pop art influences and graphic technique. The work also recalls the dark humor and irony present in Banksy’s works.

Evoked Feelings

“Johnny’s Sign” evokes mixed feelings of humor and introspection. The viewer can feel both amusement due to the irony and representation of death in a familiar and everyday manner, as well as a reflection on the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. The painting suggests a commentary on the human condition and how we perceive and relate to death.

Ideal Usage

Due to its strong visual impact and ironic theme, “Johnny’s Sign” is ideal for spaces that wish to bring an element of conversation and stimulate reflection. Here are some suggestions for rooms and spaces where this work could be displayed:

  • Living Room: to bring a vibrant focal point and encourage conversations.
  • Office: in a personal office or conference room, to add a note of creativity and humor.
  • Hallway: in an entrance hall or wide corridor, where it can impress and amuse guests.
  • Entertainment Room: to complement the dynamic and lively atmosphere of a game room or home theater.
  • Bar or Wine Cellar: to add a note of dark humor and irony in a social space.
  • Commercial Spaces: in a company lounge or waiting room, to create a modern and provocative ambiance.

Conclusions

“Johnny’s Sign” by Ciprian Rotaru is a vibrant and ironic work that explores themes of dark humor and irony towards death. The piece captures attention through its intense colors and dramatic composition, being suitable for various spaces that wish to bring an element of dynamism and reflection to their decor.

The mastery with which the painting was created, and the symbolism and message it conveys, will ennoble through beauty and knowledge any room in which it will be placed. The owner will involuntarily join the club of patrons who support local culture, and social status will be automatically elevated, simply because fine art is an interest sustained and sought only by people with the highest positions in society. Investment in such an object, especially when considering the genius and potential of such a rarely encountered artist, will not only not depreciate, but the opposite is more than likely

About the Artist

Ciprian Rotaru is a self-taught artist known for his intense dedication, visible not only in his creations but also in his unique journey, marked by trials and returns to art. Currently, Ciprian has only a few works on the market, all being the result of years of perfection and self-discovery. Each painting is carefully selected, and their value is constantly rising.

Artistic Training

Ciprian began painting at an early age at the Regina Maria School of Arts, where he refined his natural talent until the age of 14. After a lengthy break, during which he worked in various fields, he returned to painting in 2014. His works are produced during an intense nocturnal schedule, painting from 9 PM until 4 AM, when silence provides him with the mental space for creation.

Style and Technique

Ciprian employs an expressionist technique combined with idealistic realism, inspired by his favorite artist, Jack Vettriano. He builds his works starting from carefully chosen colors, each shade being a faithful representation of emotions, whether cold or warm. All works go through a long and rigorous process until they are "ready".

Given that the artist has burned numerous paintings over the years, considering them "imperfect," his pieces on the market are few in number, largely due to the intentional destruction of works. His current works are those that have passed his test of exigency.

Theme and Message

In each painting, Ciprian tries to express the essence of human character and the depth of emotions. He believes that "his paintings show what character you can be and what you can offer from your soul," emphasizing the center of interest in each work. Through the contrast between warm and cold tones, his paintings are a constant exploration of inner depth and the tension between reality and ideal.

Influences and Inspirations

Jack Vettriano represents for Ciprian a model of realism transfigured into an ideal of beauty and melancholy. This influence is visible in his ability to give the atmosphere of his paintings a distinct story, each scene offering viewers the possibility to intuit a broader world beyond the subject captured in the work.

Vision for the Future

"The center of interest matters in a painting," says Ciprian, and this will remain his main concern for the future. In his vision, art is not just about perfecting technique, but also about the ability to stir authentic emotions.
