About the Artist

Ovidiu Panighianț (known as O-VIP) is an artist who has left his mark on Romanian culture through his unique style and impressive journey that has taken him through press graphics, humorous caricature, and surrealist painting. Panighianț has exhibited in prestigious locations such as the "Orizont" Gallery and the Cotroceni National Museum. He is beloved by well-known cultural figures and collectors in Romania, including Mircea Dinescu, with whom he has collaborated extensively on various artistic projects. Currently, his works are strengthening their market position, and their value continues to rise.

Education and Artistic Journey

Ovidiu Panighianț studied at the Nicolae Grigorescu Academy of Arts (UNARTE), Graphics Department, where he was guided by renowned masters such as Dan Ion Erceanu and Mircia Dumitrescu. His talent was recognized through the "Tempus" scholarship at Bath, United Kingdom, an experience that opened new perspectives in contemporary art. Over time, he worked as an illustrator and graphic artist at the National Library of Romania and collaborated with emblematic post-revolutionary magazines, including Plai cu boi and Aspirina săracului, where he served as Art Director and Graphic Designer. Currently, he regularly contributes a cartoon column to the satirical magazine Times New Roman, bringing his subtle irony and critical spirit to a wide audience.

Style and Technique:

Panighianț stands out through his layered acrylic technique, with glazes that add depth to his works. His comic and slightly grotesque style combines elements from German expressionism and surrealism, influenced by artists such as Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Though inspired by caricatural expressionism, Panighianț brings his subjects into contemporaneity, creating a "social fantasy" that combines characters and objects treated in a contrasting manner. His paintings are often elaborate, requiring months or even years of careful work to capture the essence of the characters and the unique atmosphere of each piece.

Themes and Influences:

The artist explores profound social themes, often leading viewers into a state of contemplation and self-reflection. He is a creator who combines the grotesque and humor to convey complex messages about the human condition. Panighianț's art brings together diverse motifs and symbols, taken from throughout art history and reinterpreted to highlight the absurdity and poetry of everyday life.

Artist's Vision:

Panighianț is a lucid and amusing observer of society, and his works reflect a blend of irony and visual poetry. The artist himself describes his works as "a meeting between what has been and what could be," a vision that keeps alive the desire for innovation and authenticity.

"I wanted to take a part from each era, from each collective dream, and bring them to life on canvas. I don't just want to make people laugh, but to make them see the world around them differently."
